The record number of 43 teams from 25 nations that will compete at Euro Flag 2025 - the IFAF European Flag Football Championships – have been drawn into groups ahead of the continental tournament to be played in Paris from September 25 to 27.
The 24 men’s teams have been placed into four groups of six teams, while in the women’s competition, the 19 teams are divided into three groups of five teams and one group of four. The top two nations in the final standings will qualify for the quarterfinals of each tournament’s knockout stages.
Germany will defend the men’s title and Great Britain the women’s crown at the Val-de-Marne Interdepartmental Sports Park in Choisy-le-Roi, Val-de-Marne, in the southeast suburbs of Paris. Host nation France is ranked third in the men’s tournament and sixth in the women’s.
In the women’s competition, top-ranked Austria, the fourth place and top European finisher at the 2024 IFAF Flag Football World Championships, is in Group A along with Switzerland, Israel, Netherlands and Slovenia. Group B sees Great Britain start the defense of its European title against a Czechia team that beat them in the group stages two years ago, Finland, Ukraine and Türkiye.
Group C matches 2019 European champion and runner up in 2023 Spain with host France, Sweden, Poland and Norway. In the four-team Group D, the bronze medalist from last time around Germany takes on Italy, Denmark and Ireland.
The group placings were determined using a serpentine method that is the standard for IFAF tournaments, with teams ranked based on the current IFAF Flag Football World Rankings. Non-ranked nations that have not entered IFAF international competitions during the past three years were drawn randomly into groups and assigned a tournament seeding.
In the men’s competition, silver medalists at last year’s world championships and Europe’s top ranked team Austria faces Great Britain, Spain, Georgia, Netherlands and Croatia. Reigning European champion Germany takes on six-time winners Denmark, who were dethroned two years ago, Finland, Poland, Belgium and Slovenia in Group B.
In Group C, host France welcomes Israel, Sweden, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary. Group D sees Italy play the surprise bronze medalists at the world championships Switzerland, along with Ukraine, Ireland, Norway and Portugal.
